The late 2014 model Mac mini 2.6 GHz Desktop Computer from Apple is a compact form factor desktop solution for consumers who are dedicated to the look and feel of Apple brand mini computers. Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core 4th-Gen Haswell Cache L3: 3MB Memory 8GB of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 RAM The RAM is soldered on and is not user replaceable. Rated 3 out of 5 by Anonymous from Solid but slow Using the 8GB RAM model for just over 1 year now.
Fast enough and stable once it is done booting up and loading your apps. Takes forever to boot and load your apps. Iffy printer compatibility. I was lucky to find a drive that worked with it.
Apple put an ancient 5400 RPM disk drive in it so it takes a long time to boot (especially if you're using more than one profile) and is annoyingly slow to open programs like Safari and MS Office programs. Once the are open it's fine and stable, just be prepared to sit and wait while it loads your application. I would not get this again unless it came with an SSD drive.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Masabu from Disappointed with performance I almost considered returning this as performance is disappointing.I would recommend you to save some more money and buy MacBook air or Mini Mac but with SSD option. Also I realized @ sells version with hybrid drive, SSD + HDD.I bought this because B&H has good service and they never disappointed me in the past, this review is for the product, and not for B&H.Pros:This Mac mini is cheap Larger storage space for raw images (this is HDD version)Cons:Wireless network unstable (had to switch to cable)Very slow HDDVery slow bootHad an issue of not recognizing bluetooth on the first start up - apparently they have this issue going back 2013 and never fixing it. Rated 5 out of 5 by Pedestrian from Tastes great, less filling Migration Assistant worked flawlessly to move my stuff from an iMac running 10.6.8. Was up and running in about 15 minutes. Had a little snag migrating Lightroom photos and catalog from an external HD but that was probably due to my poor file management. The Mini is quiet, fast enough for me (Lightroom, Photoshop, MS Office, Chrome browser, iTunes. Yosemite OS seems fine; no complaints there. As you know, the 2014 Mini has a sealed bottom, so no ram upgrades. 8 gigs should be plenty for me.
I don't have any USB3 or Thunderbolt peripherals yet, so that will be my upgrade path.Free expedited shipping from B&H was a sweet benefit. Rated 5 out of 5 by UpNorthGuy from Amazing Value! Absolutely blown away by this little powerhouse!
After researching this mac Mini (2.6ghz i5 with 1tb HD), I thought I had had decided I needed a more powerful machine. I run Photoshop & Lightroom a lot and many of the online reviews would leave you to think this particular model is underpowered for such things. Opens and runs those programs with ease. Very happy I didn't spend the money on the expensive upgraded Mac Mini models with upgraded RAM and solid state drives that cost hundreds more. This may be small and inexpensive, but it is a powerful computer that I don't expect to outgrow anytime soon. Rated 5 out of 5 by Lorne E. From Take My Advice Mac Mini is a less expensive way to replace or get into Mac.
It has a small footprint and sleek look. The 2.6 GHz processor is quick compared to my older Mac Whitebook. 8Gb of memory is capable of most programs you are likely to run. There are an abundance of ports but Mini's are not expandable. It is a good value. Make sure you have realistic expectations when buying a Mac Mini: they are not Mac Pros.
They will do most tasks well, but they are not Mac Pros. If you are going run advanced software like Premiere, Media Composer, After Effects, or Davinci Resolve, it will struggle or even fail.
Take my advice: if you are going to run advanced software, get the i7 Quad Core version with as much memory as possible since memory cannot be added later. For most apps this version of Mini will suffice. I also suggest in getting the Apple keyboard. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from In the 'sweet spot' of the Mac mini lineup This mini with a 2.6 GHz (Haswell) processor and 8 GHz of RAM is in the sweet spot of the current Mac mini lineup. The base model won't have enough RAM over the long haul.
Bumping the 2.6 GHz mini to 16 gigs of RAM and adding the 1 Terabyte fusion hard drive pushes it to the max. The 2.6 GHz is perfect for everyday tasks with performance similar to the iMac. If you've got a keyboard, mouse and monitor it's a great way to join the Apple iOS world, especially if you have an iPhone or an iPad. Be aware Intel's Broadwell processor is coming and the next gen mini likely will be faster and thinner before 2016.
RAM is not user upgradable so get all you need at purchase. Rated 5 out of 5 by Nat the Blind Squirrel from Great budget alternative to iMac It's a Mac. I wanted a Mac desktop but didn't have the $$$ for a new iMac. What I did have was a little used 27 HDTV and a keyboard and mouse I liked from my old PC. Easy hook-up and I was ready to go with a new, clean Mac desktop.
It's easy to transfer files from PC to new Mac, but I've got so much junk on the PC, I'm going to take my time and only transfer files as needed. The Mac Mini takes up less space on my desk than a Harry Potter novel and has all the inputs I need. I'm not a gamer, so can't speak to that, but for everything else, this Ma ini gets the job done quickly and easily. Rated 4 out of 5 by Scooter from A pragmatic choice I bought this to replace the ancient 2007 iMac in my home recording studio. I thought long and hard about buying another iMac or even a Mac Pro (I use one for art and like it very much), but decided against it, as I have never taxed the old iMac. I decided therefore to go with this Mac Mini, figuring it would be at least as good as that. Overall, I like the design.
Unobtrusive, quiet and has no problem running even my biggest Cubase or Logic projects (I tend not to use CPU-hungry plugins). My biggest concern was the 5400RPM drive, but those concerns were unfounded. There is little complain about.
It's a shame Apple ditched the Firewire connections. Lots of studios use Firewire audio interfaces and it's something of a drag to be forced to used adapters for them.
Fortunately, everything seems to work with the adapters. I've got a MOTU 828mkII, TC Impact Twin and a Symbolic Sound Pacarana all chained together with an external drive and am having no trouble. All in all, the Mac Mini was a good buy.
It has a lot of oomph to run my projects and keeps itself quiet and tucked away. As always, it was less expensive to buy from B&H than it was to get it from apple themselves. Even with an educational discount.
